Emily Ker
THW/Medicaid Doula & Private Pay
Hi, my name is Emily.
I grew up with a lot of different cultural influences. My mom is Brazilian, my dad is American, I was born in the Philippines, and grew up in Mozambique and Malawi. As a result, I have become a cultural chameleon and love connecting with people from all over the world, which led me to getting my bachelor’s degree in International Studies and African Studies. I speak English, some Portuguese, and Chiyawo, a language spoken in Mozambique, Malawi and Tanzania.
I absolutely love working with immigrants and refugees (especially other Africans). I understand how difficult it is for so many who do not have family or community nearby. I find it such a privilege to get to be a part of that support and community for people.
I love supporting people through their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, and I love to set my clients up with resources that can help them throughout and beyond this time. I love creating a trusting relationship with my clients so that they feel comforted and safe in my presence. I believe this helps me support my clients better throughout this time, and it creates a space where people feel like they can ask any question they have. In my doula care, I strive to make sure every person feels heard, understood, respected, and valued.
I am calm, creative, and love to learn and talk about pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Outside of my doula work, I find joy in being in the sun, gardening, creating art, listening and dancing to Afrobeats, reading good books, and cooking and eating delicious food.
